Used Drill pipe

Used Drill pipe

  • API – RP-7G DP Inspection

This service evaluates used drill pipe in accordance with API-RP-7G specifications for used drill pipe and tool joints. The service includes the following elements:

  1. Electromagnetic inspection.
  2. Determination of cross-sectional area of pipe body in accordance with RP-7G.
  3. Caliper O.D. of tool joints and determination of minimum seal
  4. End areas are externally inspected by magnetic particle technique to locate transverse defects.
  5. Internal upset area is optically inspected with special attention to condition of internal coating.
  6. Visual inspection of pipe for straightness.
  7. Serially numbers and appropriate API color coding are applied.
  • Electromagnetic Inspection
  1. Drill pipe to be inspected is serially numbered with metal stencils orexisting numbers are reported.
  2. The outside diameter of the tube body is gauged full length. Ultrasonic wall thickness spot checks are performed in questionable cases
  3. At the same time, each length is visually examined for cuts, mashes, gouges and other defects. Special attention is given to the slip area.
  4. Electromagnetic inspection is next performed on the tube body. To perform this inspection magnetizing coil and detector units are secured around the pipe and propelled the full length of the tube body. The detector unit senses magnetic variations caused by internal or external fatigue cracks, corrosion pits and other defects in the pipe wall. Resulting signals are conducted to the control console where they are analyzed, amplified and recorded in graph form for evaluation by the unit operator.
  • Electromagnetic End Area Inspection

Electromagnetic induction techniques are applied to scan the inside end areas of the drill pipe for fatigue cracks, corrosion pits and other service induced defects. Drill pipe is marked and classified as above.

  • Visual Tube (Mechanical Optical Inspection)

The outside and the inside surface of the tube is visually examined.

  • Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

A transversely oriented magnetic field is induced into the tube and iron powder applied to its outside surface. The powder is attracted to areas of variation in the magnetic field created by longitudinal or three dimensional defects, thus outlying the defects. Depth of the defect is then determined by grinding to the point of maximum penetration and measuring with an accurate depth gauge.

  • MPI of Tool Joint

This inspection detects all defects extending to the surface and representing external damage or actual parting material:

  1. Protectors are removed and threads cleaned if necessary.
  2. Threads and shoulders are inspected magnetically and visually for cracks and other defects.
  3. Small defects are removed by means of grinding or finishing oft’.
  4. Small defects on the thread shoulders are removed and shoulders trimmed.
  5. Threads are inspected by means of profile gauge or ring and plug gauge.
  6. The joints are marked and an inspection
  • MPI of Box and Pin for Longitudinal Defects

A transverse magnetic field is induced. Pins and boxes are inspected for longitudinal defects using the liquid suspension method.

  • Visual Thread Inspection
  1. Removal of Protectors.
  2. Visual check of threads.
  3. Lubricating of threads and installation of protectors
  • Thread Inspection with Profile Gauge

Threads are inspected with profile gauge for pin elongation and box expansion.

  • Caliper OD Inspection of Tool Joints

O.D inspection of drill pipe tool joints is performed using ring gauges.

  • MPI for Long Defect on Slips Area

AC-YOKE or shooting rod magnetization of the slip area and magnetic particle

  • Inspection for Longitudinal Service -Induced Defects.
  • D Gauging of Pipe Body Only

A gauge is rotated along a helical path down the pipe to locate abrasive wear, stretching expansion and other deviations from nominal O.D.

Wall thickness spot test -ultrasonic compression wave technique

Ultrasonic spot checks are made to determine the wall thickness along a helical path or in specified area.

  • Shoulder Refacing of DP

Utilizing a centered grinding tool nicks, gouges, pits and other imperfections are removed from the seals of connections of the above material. The amount of the material removed is carefully controlled by the use of Vernier gauges to meet with specifications.

  • DP Straightening

All pipes lengths are conveyed through the hydraulic pipe straightening unit to remove bends, kinks, and cork screws. Charges are made only for those lengths, where straightening became necessary.

  • Inspection After Machine Shop Repair

Dimensional Inspection and Magnetic Particle Inspection performed to API specifications of dimensions.
