New and used Tubing inspection

New and used Tubing inspection

Inspection Procedure

  • Mechanical Optical Inspection
  • The outside surface of the tube is visually examined to locate visible, injurious defects.

Magnetic Particle Inspection

A transversely oriented magnetic field is induced into the tube and iron powder applied to its outside surface. The powder is attracted to areas of variation in the magnetic field created by longitudinal or three dimensional defects, thus outlying the defects. Depth of the defect is then determined by grinding to the point of maximum penetration and measuring with an accurate depth gauge.

The tube is marked and classified as under API Spec.

Electro-Magnetic Standard Inspection (Sonoscope)

The tube is conveyed through the Sonoscope system where is magnetized and its circumference scanned for variations in magnetic field resulting from internal and external defects of transverse and three dimensional orientation.

  1. Signals from the inspection system are conducted to the electronics console where they are analyzed, amplified and recorded in graph from evaluation by the unit operator. Exclusive circuitry prevents false defects identifications.
  2. Verification of the indicated defects is accomplished by optical and magnetic particle inspection techniques.
  3. Visual inspection of the pipe ends for handling damage and other visible defects is also performed.

Tubing is marked and the pipe is classified under API Spec.

Magnetic Particle Inspection for Special Upset Of High Strength Materials

This inspection locates injurious defects in the end areas of this material. Utilizing AC-YOKE magnetizing equipment longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are induced into the end areas to detect defects regardless of orientation. Careful magnetic particle inspection is performed on the outside surface. Sand blasting is recommended for most sensitive inspection.

Magnaflux Inspection of End Areas

This inspection detects all defects extending to the surface and representing external damage or actual parting material inspection procedure.

  • Protectors are removed and threads cleaned if necessary.
  • Threads and shoulders are inspected magnetically and visually far cracks and other defects.
  • Small defects are removed by means of grinding or finishing off
  • Small defects on the threads holders are removed and shoulders
  • Threads are inspected by means of profile gauge or ring and plug gauge.
  • The joints are marked and an inspection report prepared.

API Drifting (Full Length)

Drifts according to API standards are applied to ensure specified I.D. dimensions.

Ultrasonic Wall Thickness Spot Test

Ultrasonic spot checks are made to determine the wall thickness along a helical path or in specified areas.

Thread Inspection With API Thread Gauge

Pins and coupling are measured for compliance with API Spec.

Visual Thread Inspection

  1. Protectors are removed.
  2. Threads are visually checked.
  3. Threads are lubricated and protectors reinstalled.

Internal Cleaning

Removal of scale, rust and other deposits with rotary metallic brushes

External Cleaning

Removal of external scale rust and other deposits with metallic brushes

  • External Coating
  • Internal Coating
  • Hardness Testing

Hardness testers are employed to determine pipe hardness

  • Inspection After Machine Shop Repair

Dimensional Inspection and Magnetic Particle Inspection Performed to API specifications of dimensions.
